For Reviewing and Editing Draft Surveys
STRUCTURE & FLOW
Evaluate survey flow and respondent experience
Evaluate the overall flow and respondent experience of the survey. Identify any sections that may cause confusion, fatigue, or drop-off, and suggest specific improvements to enhance clarity and engagement.
Ensure logical and intuitive sequencing
Analyze the order of questions to ensure they follow a natural and logical progression. Recommend reorderings where transitions feel abrupt or where context is needed before a question is asked.
Check for question redundancy
Review the questionnaire to identify any questions that are repetitive or duplicative in intent. Suggest opportunities to consolidate or remove overlapping items to streamline the survey without losing valuable data.
Test for appropriate skip logic and branching
Review the survey structure to ensure logic flows correctly based on prior responses. Identify any places where additional skip logic or filters would improve respondent experience or data quality.
Audit for respondent burden
Estimate survey length and cognitive load. Identify ways to reduce burden through question reduction, smarter routing, or response type simplification (e.g., using image-based inputs, sliders, or grids only where necessary).
Optimize questions for mobile-friendliness
Evaluate the survey from a mobile respondent’s perspective. Flag any items that may be difficult to read, navigate, or respond to on a small screen and suggest mobile-optimized alternatives.
QUESTION CLARITY & LANGUAGE
Assess clarity and simplicity of wording
Evaluate the language used in each question for complexity or ambiguity. Rewrite any confusing phrasing using plain language that’s easy for respondents across all education levels to understand.
Review for leading or biased language
Analyze the survey for leading or biased language. Flag any questions that may influence responses and suggest revisions to ensure all wording is neutral and balanced.
Evaluate sensitivity and inclusivity of language
Review the survey for potentially sensitive or non-inclusive phrasing. Recommend edits to ensure the language is respectful, inclusive, and culturally appropriate for a diverse audience.
Review open-ended questions for clarity and usefulness
Examine any open-ended questions to ensure they are clear and likely to yield thoughtful, analyzable responses. Suggest rewording or replacing open ends that may confuse or overwhelm respondents.
Flag outdated or irrelevant references
Scan the survey for any time-sensitive language, outdated references, or examples that may no longer resonate with respondents. Suggest updates to keep the questionnaire current and contextually appropriate.
SCALE & RESPONSE DESIGN
Assess for scale consistency and clarity
Review all scaled questions to ensure anchors (labels) are consistent, balanced, and clearly differentiated. Highlight any inconsistencies or confusing scales and recommend improvements.
Check response option quality and exhaustiveness
Examine the response options for each question to ensure they are mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive, and easy for a respondent to accurately answer. Suggest revisions where needed.
Identify opportunities for scale standardization
Where appropriate, suggest the consolidation of scale types (e.g., using consistent 5-point or 7-point Likert scales) to simplify analysis and reduce respondent confusion.
Review randomization and rotation logic
Ensure that any randomized question orders or option rotations are applied correctly and consistently. Identify areas where randomization could help reduce order bias and improve data quality.
Check consistency in formatting and terminology
Review for consistent use of terminology, capitalization, punctuation, and numbering throughout the survey. Suggest edits to maintain a polished, professional, and user-friendly presentation.
OBJECTIVES & COVERAGE
Check alignment with business/research objectives
Evaluate whether each question meaningfully contributes to the overall goals of the study. Flag questions that seem irrelevant or misaligned, and suggest alternatives that would provide more actionable insights.
Identify content gaps and missed opportunities
Identify any gaps in content that could limit the depth or usefulness of the analysis. Suggest additional questions or topics that would help ensure comprehensive coverage of the research objectives.
Suggest metadata capture improvements
Recommend background questions (e.g., demographic, behavioral, or attitudinal) that should be included to enrich segmentation and analysis, especially if missing or underdeveloped in the current version.
TARGETING & SCREENING
Validate screening and quota logic
Assess the screener questions to ensure they are effectively targeting the right audience. Suggest changes that would improve targeting without excluding valuable subgroups or over-filtering.
